This three session class is a collaboration between the Printmaking and Electronic and Technical Arts studios.
An introduction to using a laser cutter to cut woodblock plates for printing, the class will cover prepping images in Photoshop, Illustrator or Inkscape using a laser cutter to cut wood, printmaking strategies to prepare plates and woodblock printing.
Lab time to prepare plates will be available Mondays 10am-1pm.
Inkscape is free vector design software. If you want to use it for this class, please download and install it before the first session. There are versions for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Go to Inkscape.org where you can download it.
This class has three sessions: May 25th, June 1st, and June 8th, from 10am-2pm.
Session 1: Intro to printing on "test plate" and discuss the process
Session 2: Working with Adobe illustrator or Inkscape to create a plate and laser cutting training in ETA
Class 3: Laser cutting plates plus lab time to cut plates (laser cutting wood can take a bit of time)
Materials: A materials fee of $55 provides you with 2 plywood plates, one sheet of professional grade printmaking paper as well as studio etching tools, ink, and student grade print paper.
Additional ply plates will be available for purchase in the studio for $5 each.

Skill Level Prerequisite: Some experience working with computers using the graphic applications Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape as well as some knowledge of printmaking processes. Laptop recommended, but not necessary.
Ages: Ages 14+ welcome
Registration Notes:
- Registration will close May 11th, two weeks prior to the first day of class.
- If minimum enrollment has not been reached by this time, this class will be cancelled.
Feel free to bring a meal or snacks. Eating is allowed in the common area adjacent to the print studio, and there is a kitchen in which to store and reheat food.
Instructor Bio:
Peter Bill is an Artist, Activist and Educator. He has, since learning photoshop v. 1.5, been interested in connecting under-represented communities with digital tools so their voices may be broadcast.
He apprenticed at Atelier Bordas in Paris to learn stone print litho, and has been involved with various printmaking techniques since the 90's.
Peter Bill's award winning paint and video landscapes have shown in such diverse venues as The Kitchen(NYC), the Henry Art Gallery(Seattle), FILE Festival(São Paulo, Brazil), and other international venues. He continues in his Oil paintings and video work to weave the painterly with the digital, pixels and paint, indigo and 191970 blue. He envisioned and realized the first time-lapse film festival in North America, the Gila Timelapse Film Festival, and has curated and directed shows on three continents.
