Discover the art of intarsia by combining multiple stones into a single seamless design. Learn how to plan a composition, select complementary materials, precisely cut and fit each piece, and create clean, nearly invisible seams. Perfect for students looking to expand their lapidary skills while exploring color, pattern, and creative stone design.

Details

  • After completing this class, you'll be able to attend Focused Open Studio: Lapidary to practice what you’ve learned.

  • We'll take a 30-minute lunch break, if you want to bring food or snacks. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level. There are no close-by restaurants.

Prerequisites

You must have completed Introduction to Lapidary: Cutting and Carving Stones at BARN or an equivalent class elsewhere.

Materials

A $40 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers all materials needed.

You Should Bring

  • Any stones you want to work with.

  • A towel for drying your hands and stones.

  • A cotton apron.

  • Safety glasses and magnifying glasses (or wear ones available in the studio)

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.

  • Wear closed-toe shoes and natural-fiber clothing.

  • Do not wear loose or synthetic-fiber clothing, scarves, or ties.

  • Do not wear dangling jewelry, such as necklaces and bracelets.

  • Tie back beards. Tie back long hair in a bun.

Instructor
Karin Luvaas

Karin Luvaas is a Bainbridge Island artist and jeweler with a degree in encaustics, painting, and metal sculpture. She has studied under numerous jewelry masters including Blaine Lewis, founder of New Approach School for Jewelers in Tennessee, and achieved graduate jeweler status under Alan Revere of the world-renowned Revere Academy of San Francisco. Karin also is a GIA Graduate Gemologist and holds a Jewelers of America Bench Jeweler Technician certificate. Her current work can be seen at karinluvaas.com
