Make a pendant or ring of sterling silver and learn how to cut lapidary material for inlay. You'll have several shapes from which to choose. We'll discuss what goes into creating an inlay design and learn setting and polishing techniques.

Day 1: Fabrication. Because you already know how to fabricate bezels, a quick/light version of a demo will be offered. Then you start your inlay — cutting and assembling.
Day 2: Continue inlay work and finish your new pendant or ring.

• Choose one of these when you register (no rocks are included in either): 

• • Pendant kit: Sterling silver to make three small pendants or one or two larger pendants.

  • Ring kit: Sterling silver to make two small rings or one larger ring.

  • Skill Level: You must have intermediate soldering and fabrication skills.

• If you finish only one project during class, you'll have enough material to practice during future Jewelry Open Studio and Focused Open Studio: Lapidary sessions.

• We'll take a 30-minute lunch break if you want to bring food or snacks. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level. There are no close-by restaurants.

Prerequisites 

• To be able to complete the project during this class, you must:

• • Have completed Introduction to Lapidary: Cutting and Carving Stones or its equivalent elsewhere.

  • Have experience bezel-setting cabochons.

  • Be proficient in soldering and basic jewelry-making processes, such as measuring, sawing, filing, and forming.

Materials

• A $65 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers the sterling silver needed to make the pendants or rings.
• You must bring a selection of rocks to use. 
• • Try to select material that is about the same hardness on the MOGS scale. 
  • Think about color combinations you want to use.
  • You should also bring:
  • • Towels for drying your hands and cleaning up.
    • Safety glasses and magnifying glasses (or wear ones available in the studio).

Class Policies

• Ages 14 and up are welcome.

• Wear closed-toe shoes and natural-fiber clothing.

• Do not wear loose or synthetic-fiber clothing, scarves, or ties.

• Do not wear dangling jewelry, such as necklaces and bracelets.

• Tie back beards. Tie back long hair in a bun.
