About
In this fast paced two day class, you will be introduced to the prong setting and given examples of how to make a custom prong setting for yourself.
Day one you will learn about the stones shape and how to secure the stone in the setting. Day two, you will learn to make one or two prong settings. They can be attached to one of your pieces later on. Toward the end of class I will be available for personal project questions. This is a skills class so you will come out of it with skills to practice/use and maybe a setting or two.
This is a medium advanced class involving delicate soldering, sawing, and stone setting. You should be comfortable soldering on your own and not afraid of messing up.
An Additional Materials fee is: $25 (check to BARN or cash) to be paid at the beginning of class.
Stones will be provided for students. The studio has these tools but students may bring their own: sanding sticks, small files, pliers, burnishers, calipers, burrs, MAGNIFICATION (like opti-visors), flex shaft hammer hand pieces, Benchmate vice. If you want to make you settings out of something other than brass, bring it with you. BARN has silver you can buy.
Instructor: Jody Lyle is a goldsmith with over 23 years of experience designing and making jewelry. It all started in a high school jewelry class which lead to a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas , to be followed by many jewelry classes and workshops all over the west. Outside of the classroom, the world’s influences continued to inspire her with travels to places to view art in Egypt, Greece, Mexico, and the British Isles. Jody’s jewelry collections have been shown throughout New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, the San Francisco bay area, and now on Bainbridge Island. Jody continues to hone her skills, acquiring new techniques and is continually expanding the definition of her jewelry. As a child Jody learned that for a day to be satisfying, one had to make something. This is simple but it still holds true.
