In this class, students start out learning to use the tools and equipment, such as the pitch bowl and chasing hammer, for chasing and repoussé, while experimenting with the effects of these tools on sheet copper. The traditional approach of lining (chasing) the front of the metal and punching out (repoussé) from the back is next. Finally the students learn texturing and refining techniques. This class is process and sample oriented. Students will learn techniques they can use to make finished work in the future.

Additional Materials Fee: $40. Please bring a check or cash to the first day of class.

The studio will have all that you need for the weekend workshop but you are welcome to bring your own tools.
Please bring if you have but no need to buy: safety glasses with sides, reading glasses, ear protection, Cotton apron or you can wear all cotton clothes, Closed-toe shoes, Design ideas/drawings that can be translated to 3”x 3” sheets of metal. You can use Clip-Art images for the first exercises, original drawings or designs the instructor will bring. You will create a simple original design for your final piece(s), Any chasing tools you already own (instructor will help with adapting them and cleaning them up if necessary) and lunch or you can go out. 

Instructor Bio:
Nancy Megan Corwin is a jeweler/metalsmith, teacher, curator and writer in the field of art metals specializing in the ancient techniques of chasing and repoussé. Megan has artwork in a number of private collections throughout the United States, as well as The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England, the permanent collection of The State University of New Mexico-Las Cruces Art Gallery, and at the Tacoma Art Museum, Washington. Megan is the author of the technique and gallery book “Chasing and Repoussé: Methods Ancient and Modern,” which is in it’s second printing and is published internationally. Megan is represented by Facèré Jewelry Art Gallery in Seattle, WA.
