About

Japanese calligraphy, or Shodo, is a tranquil art form of calligraphic writing focusing on fluid brush movements to create kanji or kana characters, emphasizing harmony, balance, and energy. 

BARN, in partnership with Bloedel Reserve, is delighted to offer this unique opportunity for you to enjoy a calligraphy workshop in the Japanese Teahouse at Bloedel Reserve, a 140-acre internationally recognized public garden and forest preserve on the north end of Bainbridge Island. There, Mitsuko Toyama will explain the history of Japanese calligraphy, followed by a demonstration of calligraphic marks and strokes. You'll have the opportunity to create your own work of calligraphy to keep.

A materials fee of $4, included in the price of the class, covers all the materials you'll need.

Class Policies

Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Mitsuko Toyama

Like all children in Japan, Mitsuko began her calligraphy training with Sumi ink at age 8. Her next phase of the calligraphy training began when she met Master calligrapher Syunpoo Akashi, a visiting instructor from Japan at UW, nearly 30 years ago. She studied Kanji calligraphy at Meito Shodo School founded by Akashi in Redmond, WA, for 10 years. She is currently studying Kana moji (cursive letters with small brushes) under Yu Iwasaki and is a member of the Puget Sound Sumi Association. Mitsuko says her love of the sumi ink scent in the process of making her own ink is the beginning of her meditative calligraphy time.
