About

In this intensive workshop, you’ll learn how to make a hinged bangle with not one, but two different kinds of clasps —  pressure (the main one) and butterfly safety. With the price of precious metal, you can’t risk having your bracelet fall off! As your instructor says: "Belt and suspenders, baby!"

You’ll start by making an oval bangle, and then cut it in half. On one side, you’ll solder a durable-yet-elegant hinge and, on the other, a pressure clasp and a butterfly clasp. Along the way, you’ll hear plenty of tips and secrets. Some of them even related to jewelry making!

You’ll also enjoy a brief introduction to flush setting stones.

Details

  • Experience level: Intermediate. You must be proficient in soldering and competent in all basic jewelry-making processes such as drilling, sawing, filing, and forming. You can contact the studio if you need to discuss the experience and skills necessary.
  • You should bring an apron, towels for drying metal and hands, pen, notebook, Ultra Fine-Point Sharpie or other pen that writes on metal, and safety and magnifying glasses (or wear ones available in the studio).
  • We'll take a one-hour lunch break, if you want to bring food or snacks. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level. There are no restaurants close by.

Details

  • The cost of materials is not included in the registration fee. The instructor will bring kits, which include all the materials you'll need to complete the project, for you to purchase on the first day of class.
    • The kit cost will be about $170. Because the precious-metals market is volatile, this price is subject to change.
    • Bring a credit card or check with you for onsite purchase.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes and natural-fiber clothing.
  • Do not wear loose or synthetic-fiber clothing, scarves, ties, or loose or dangling jewelry such as necklaces and bracelets.

Instructor
Alex Boyd

When Alex as a young boy, he stole an enchanted ring from a powerful bruja. That night his slumber was disturbed by a tapping at his window. When he slid the window open, a huge raven rushed in, flew around the room, and perched on his bookshelf. I know what you have taken from me, the raven cawed. don't know what you’re talking about, Alex lied, hiding his bejeweled finger behind his back. No matter. It is your problem now. The wearer of that ring is indentured to create more talismans of power, either for 1,000 years or until he makes something so sublime, so perfect, so beautiful that the spell is broken and he is freed. One thousand years it is, Alex said as he thrust the raven out the window and slammed it shut behind her. He has been making jewelry ever since.
