About

BARN member: $40
Non-member: $55

A true beginning to the world of sewing, this class is designed to teach you how to love your machine while making a great bag for summer.

This class is for the beginner, and no sewing experience is required. You will learn machine handling basics while you complete your first project – and while you learn just how amazing sewing can be!

You will need to supply your own machine and a sense of humor as you take your first step to becoming an accomplished sewist!

Students should bring the following items with them to the class:

  • A sewing machine in good working order, including the manual.  Don’t forget your power cord!
  • Basic sewing notions:  fabric scissors, pins, coordinating thread, bobbins and extra needles.  A pattern will be provided to you in class.
  • For the bag, you will need the following fabric:
  • Main Body/Straps – 2/3 yard, 45” wide minimum
  • Base – 1/3 yard, 45” wide minimum
  • Lining – 3/4 yard, 45” wide minimum
For this project, the instructor recommends a cotton base fabric. You can use quilting cottons for a lightweight bag.  For more body, choose cotton/linen blends in the quilting section, or canvas.  Use only wovens, no knits, and no laminated cottons. Home decor weight fabrics would work, but avoid heavy chenille as some machines are not capable of sewing this effectively.

INSTRUCTOR: Jennifer Rhoads.
