About
Linocut is a very accessible printmaking process. (And SO much fun!) Learn the fundamental methods in this one-day workshop and continue your creative explorations at home. This workshop is open to all experience levels.
Techniques taught in this workshop:
- Learn about the process, tools, and materials needed for relief printing.
- Practice cutting techniques and mark-making on a sample block.
- Create a design for your linocut print using cut-paper Notan; a Japanese design concept that means “light-dark harmony”.
- Transfer your image to the prepped linocut block.
- Carve your block and ink it up.
- Print your block, both by hand and on a press.
- Learn about and test different printmaking papers and other substrates.
We will be carving on unmounted ‘Battleship Gray Linoleum’ printing blocks. All materials will be provided. You will leave this workshop with your carved block and finished prints, and a list of materials where you can find everything you need to continue your journey with linocut printing.

- Have an idea for your linocut print using cut-paper Notan; a Japanese design concept that means “light-dark harmony”, or bring your own design ideas. If you choose a Notan design, you will have the opportunity to create it in class.

Instructor Bio:
Kathryn Anderson (she/her) is an artist and printmaker living in Tacoma, Washington, USA. Classically trained in the visual arts, Kathryn studied at The Art Students League in Manhattan, N.Y., and was a Fine Arts Printmaking major at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. Kathryn sells her work internationally and is represented by two galleries in Washington State.
Her highly detailed work strives to capture the beauty, mystery, stories, and imagery that moves her spirit. She is most inspired by our natural world, and many of her works show the influence of her gardening, birdwatching, and excursions into the wild. She is captivated by the small details of the beauty she sees around her. By really studying her subjects, be they flora, fauna, or the human form, she feels that she better understands their essence and knows them more deeply.
Kathryn’s work focuses mainly on printmaking, specifically linocut and etching. The process of printmaking is a very old hands-on process, from the concept and drawing through the carving of the linoleum, or the very process-heavy method of preparing, etching, and individually printing the copper plate by hand. This work is her passion.
