Learn how to use silver solder and a jeweler’s torch. See how the material flows when soldering jump rings, earring posts, and other kinds of joints.In this one-day skills class, you'll use the Smith® Little Torch to solder copper. You'll practice several types of soldering techniques and leave with samples you completed in class.

Details

  • After completing this class, you'll be able to attend Jewelry Open Studio sessions to practice what you’ve learned.

  • Bring food or snacks for a 15- to 30-minute lunch break. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level. There are no close-by restaurants.

Prerequisites

No prerequisites. This class is designed for beginners and those needing to refresh their fundamental soldering skills.

Materials

  • A $15 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers all materials needed.

  • You should bring:

    • A small towel for drying your hands and metal.

    • A cotton apron.

    • Safety glasses and magnifying glasses (or wear ones available in the studio)

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.

  • Wear closed-toe shoes and natural-fiber clothing.

  • Do not wear loose or synthetic-fiber clothing, scarves, or ties.

  • Do not wear dangling jewelry, such as necklaces and bracelets.

  • Tie back beards. Tie back long hair in a bun.

Erin is a hobbyist metalsmith and lapidary artist, studio monitor, instructor, and studio lead in the Jewelry & Fine Metals Studio. She loves tools, technology, and welcoming people into the jewelry studio. Her favorite part about being in the studio is using her imagination to work on tiny engineering puzzles that occasionally turn into wearable art.
