About

Whether you're new to the craft or need a refresher, here's a way to get started in the Jewelry & Fine Metals Studio. 

Through instructor demonstration and hands-on practice, you’ll learn the skills that you need to begin working in our studio as well prepare for future classes. Those skills include:

  • Cutting metal using a jeweler’s saw, step shear, bench shear, and disk and shape cutters.
  • Texturing metal using stamps, hammers, and the rolling mill.
  • Drilling using the drill press and flex shaft.
  • Forming using dapping blocks and punches.
  • Finishing using files, belt sander, and grinder. 

You'll receive a notebook that includes detailed information on the tools, equipment, and procedures that are covered in the class. 

Details

  • Skill level: All levels.
  • After completing this class, you'll be able to attend Jewelry Open Studio to practice what you’ve learned.

Details

  • A $42 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers all materials needed.
  • Bring a towel for cleanup.
  • Bring a cotton apron.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
  • Wear closed-toed shoes and natural-fiber clothing.
  • Do not wear loose clothing and/or dangling jewelry that can get caught in rotating tools.
  • Tie back long hair.
Instructor
Erin Wyatt

Erin is a hobbyist metalsmith and lapidary artist, studio monitor, instructor, and studio lead in the Jewelry & Fine Metals Studio. She loves tools, technology, and welcoming people into the jewelry studio. Her favorite part about being in the studio is using her imagination to work on tiny engineering puzzles that occasionally turn into wearable art.
