About

Weaving combines color, fiber, and patterns in endless, unique options to create cloth. You'll learn all the steps involved in weaving — setting up and using a floor loom, project planning, weave structure and pattern, and many tricks of the trade.

You'll weave small samples with the focus on learning how to set up the loom, plan your project, and weave. You'll walk out of class with a strong understanding of this complex but incredibly rewarding process.

In this intensive, five-session class, you'll learn how to:

  • Prepare fiber to go on the loom.
  • Indirectly warp a loom (and what "warp" means).
  • Set up a floor loom.
  • Weave multiple weaving structures.
  • Change colors and create more complex patterning.
  • Plan weaving projects.
  • Read a weaving draft.

Details

  • Skill Level: Beginners.
  • Although the class officially ends at 2 PM, you're welcome to keep weaving throughout the afternoon (and evening, if you're really motivated!).
  • We have loom options that are wheelchair accessible. Let us know by emailing fiber.programming@bainbridgebarn.org
  • Bring a lunch for after class if you like. A refrigerator and microwave are available on the lower level.
  • You'll be able to use the loom for one week after the class, to complete your final project.

Details

  • A $35 materials fee, included in the cost of this class, covers all yarn and supplies needed.
  • You'll receive materials to weave two small samples in class. You'll also receive materials to weave a final usable piece, such as napkins or kitchen towels, in 8/2 cotton.
  • You'll use BARN floor looms and equipment.

Class Policies

Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Instructor
Alison Waller

Originally from Yorkshire, UK, Alison lived in China for several years before moving to Puget Sound in 2019 with her husband and two young children. She has enjoyed knitting, crochet, and working with beads since childhood, but it wasn't until moving to Washington that she tried weaving. In the last four years, she's become obsessed both with making baskets and making fiber on a floor loom or rigid heddle loom. She has taken classes with many local and nationally recognized weavers at BARN, developing her skills as a weaver and a teacher. She’s now delighted to serve as the weaving coordinator in the Fiber Arts Studio, where she also teaches rigid heddle and floor loom classes.
