About

Weaving combines color, fiber, and patterns in endless, unique options to create cloth. You'll learn all the steps involved in weaving: setting up and using a floor loom, project planning, weave structure and pattern, and many tricks of the trade.

You'll weave small samples with the focus on learning how to set up the loom, plan your project, and weave. You'll walk out of class with a strong understanding of this complex but incredibly rewarding process.

In this intensive, five-session class, you'll learn how to:

  • Prepare fiber to go on the loom.
  • Indirectly warp a loom (and what "warp" means).
  • Set up a floor loom.
  • Weave multiple weaving structures.
  • Change colors and create more complex patterning.
  • Plan weaving projects.
  • Read a weaving draft.

Details

  • Skill Level: Beginners
  • Although the class officially ends at noon, you're welcome to keep weaving throughout the afternoon (and evening, if you're really motivated!).
  • We have loom options that are wheelchair accessible. Let us know by emailing fiber.programming@bainbridgebarn.org.
  • Bring a lunch for after class if you like. A refrigerator and microwave are available on the lower level.

Details

  • A $30 materials fee, included in the cost of this class, covers all yarn and supplies needed.
  • You'll receive materials to weave three small samples in class. If you'd like to forgo the last sample and bring in your own materials to make your third warp into a usable piece (like tea towels or napkins), please purchase three to four half-pound cones of 8/2 unmercerized cotton in two or three different colors and bring them to class. You can purchase these from Eugene Textile Center or from Jane Stafford Textiles.
  • You'll use BARN floor looms and equipment.

Class Policies

Ages 14 and up are welcome.
