Introduction to Enameling: Opaques
Get an introduction to enameling and qualify to use the enameling equipment in Focused Open Studios.
This introduction to the vast world of enameling covers kiln firing, painting and sifting techniques, metal preparation, and several enameling techniques. Enameling, a technique used since ancient times, involves fusing glass to metal.

Experience Level: Beginner. No jewelry experience is needed.
This class fulfills the prerequisite for other enameling classes.
Completion of this class gains you access to Focused Open Studio: Enameling and use of the enameling equipment. Focused Open Studio time for enameling is separate from general-use Jewelry Open Studio due to the sensitivity of the materials used.
We'll take a 30-minute lunch break, if you want to bring food or snacks. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level. There are no close-by restaurants.
Prerequisites
None. This class is designed for beginners and those needing to refresh their skills.
Materials
A $40 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers all materials needed.
You'll have an opportunity to purchase additional copper to make blanks. You can pay for your purchase at the front desk using a card during business hours. You're welcome to bring your own copper.
You Should Bring:
A towel for drying your hands and metal.
A cotton apron.
Safety glasses and magnifying glasses (or wear ones available in the studio)
Class Policies
Ages 14 and up are welcome.
Wear closed-toe shoes and natural-fiber clothing.
Do not wear loose or synthetic-fiber clothing, scarves, or ties.
Do not wear dangling jewelry, such as necklaces and bracelets.
Tie back beards. Tie back long hair in a bun.
