This introduction to the art and science of lost wax, or model, casting is perfect for anyone curious about casting, whether you’re looking to develop new skills or simply want to better understand the process.

Day One: We’ll begin with an overview of both the vacuum and centrifugal casting processes, from model (botanical or wax) to finished metal. You’ll then move into hands-on work creating models, spruing, investing, and calculating metal weights. A variety of waxes will be introduced to help you explore different approaches.

Day Two: Watch your work come to life as you learn to melt metal, safely operate the vacuum table or the centrifugal caster, release your casting from the mold, and complete basic metal-finishing techniques.

While we'll introduce various materials you can use for models, this is not a formal wax-carving class. You'll have two to three hours to create your models.

Details

• To be able to complete the projects, it's recommended that you've taken Introduction to Jewelry: Skills Class and Introduction to Jewelry Soldering at BARN or the equivalent.
• We'll take a 30-minute lunch break, if you want to bring food or snacks. There is a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level. There are no close-by restaurants.
• We'll be casting in bronze. If you prefer sterling silver, please bring clean, solder-free scrap or casting grain with you on the first day. BARN may have limited silver available for purchase.

Details

• A $28 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers 50 grams of bronze for two small 3-inch by 2.5-inch flasks. You’re welcome to cast more if you like.
• If you need more casting material, bring a credit card for any additional materials. Some sterling silver will be available for purchase. We recommend checking current metal prices in advance so you can plan accordingly for any additional metal costs.
• You can bring found objects, pre-carved waxes, or 3D prints to class, so we can discuss what can and can’t be cast.
• You should bring an apron; towels for drying metal and hands; and pen, notebook, and Ultra Fine-Point Sharpie or other pen that writes on metal.
• You also should bring safety glasses and magnifying glasses (or wear ones available in the studio), and, if you have them, an N95 mask and a wax pen.

Class Policies

• Ages 14 and up are welcome.
• Wear closed-toe shoes and natural-fiber clothing.
• Don't wear loose or synthetic-fiber clothing, scarves, or ties.
• Don’t wear loose or dangling jewelry, such as necklaces and bracelets.
• Tie back beards. Tie back long hair in a bun.
