About

Learn the fundamentals  of making beautiful wooden pens as you also learn safe use of a lathe and its chisels.

In the initial class, the instructor will discuss the basic concepts of turning, using the modern pen as a model. Students will use the drill press to prepare their turning blanks.

Then, depending on the experience level of students in the class, the instructor will work out a schedule so that each student gets sufficient lathe time and one-on-one attention to complete a pen. Some students will continue working that afternoon, after a one-hour break for lunch, while others will come back the next day for their turning time.

Details:

  • Beginners are welcome. But before the class you must attend our free, one-hour Orientation to the Woodshop class. Multiple dates are listed on the Woodshop calendar.
  • Materials fee of $12 is payable at the class.
  • Bring a sack lunch or plan to go out for lunch during the break.
Instructor: Oscar Barbo has been a woodworker and turner for more than 25 years. Oscar is well traveled, learning his turning in Hawaii, where he relished making pens from the local Koa wood. He often uses rare woods and non-wood materials like bone and antler. He is  looking share his skills while promoting pen design.
