This class will be taught through Zoom. Class time is Pacific Daylight Time.

Starting with how metals work this online experience explains annealing, firescale, melting, alloying, casting ingots, making sheet and wire without cracking (how to fix it when it does), age-hardening (making alloys harder using heat), metal casting issues, and the Perils of Oxygen. The crystals that metals are made up of are well explained, and how to make them bigger (generally bad) and smaller (generally good) is addressed. Just enough science to do the job of improving your metalworking, without overwhelming you with nerdy detail. You will leave with a better holistic understanding of your material, and be able to avoid traps and problems as a result.

Instructor Bio:

Professor Emeritus, Charles Lewton-Brain, is a master goldsmith, author, and artist. He invented Foldforming, internationally recognized as the first new metalsmithing technique in over 200 years. He co-founded the world's largest, free, internet-based educational resource for jewelers known as Ganoksin. Over 1000 pages of his research on metalsmithing and jewelry making are in the archives on Ganoksin. His work has been internationally exhibited since the 1980s. He received Canada’s highest honor for fine craft, the Governor-General Award, in 2012.
