About

Make charming torchworked turtles and learn the basics of torchworking safety as well as how to set up your torch workstation. The instructor will demonstrate a simple version of a turtle, and you'll make one yourself. You'll also see  demonstrations of more advanced techniques, which you'll have the opportunity to try.

You'll learn and practice shaping gathers of glass, building more glass onto an originally shaped gather, and manipulating the cumulative gathers with various tools. You'll also practice preplanning the sequence of the work and working with punties.

Details

  • Skill level: This an ideal starting point for those new to torchworking. More advanced torchworkers or those who'd like a refresher are welcome, too.
  • You'll use borosilicate glass, but these techniques will transfer to soft glass, so variations needed for soft glass will be discussed.

Details

A $30 materials fee, included in the price of the class, covers everything you need.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
  • Wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants of natural fibers. Wear closed-toe shoes (preferably leather or cotton). Stretch fabrics are prohibited.
Instructor
Laura Arns

Although she's a computer scientist by day, Laura Arns has been working with glass in various ways for more than 20 years during her free time. As a lampworker, she is somewhat unusual because she hasn't specialized but instead works with both borosilicate and soft glass to create beads, marbles, blown ornaments, sculptures, goblets, and more. She particularly enjoys collaborative projects with artists and artisans who work in other mediums. Over the years, she's had the opportunity to learn from numerous well-known lampworkers. A former college professor, she's looking forward to more teaching in BARN's Glass Arts Studio.
