*This class has a prerequisite. Please see below.

Explore methods and materials for making decorative elements for wood projects in four sessions over two weeks. The focus will be decoration opportunities for guitar makers, (sound hole rosette, purfling, inlay for headstock and for fingerboard), but the techniques that you will learn may be applied to a broad array of fine woodworking projects.
You will be guided through the design considerations of inlay and marquetry, material choices, and tool and jig building as you construct your own decorative element.

Prerequisites:

  • Prior to the first class session, *you must complete the free, one-hour class, "Orientation to the Wood Shop." This is offered frequently, so check the Woodworking calendar for the next available offering.
  • Students will need to be reasonably proficient with chisels, knives and hand saws including jewelers saws, in a small scale context.

Instructor:  Alan Simcoe is a maker of guitars, ukuleles and other stringed instruments. He and his wife, Debby, own Village Music on Bainbridge Island. Besides showcasing his custom instruments, the shop offers music lessons and instrument repairs. Simcoe also performs with his Latin jazz band, The Cuban Heels. He was named an Island Treasure in 2009.
