Playwriting Workshop with Mark Harvey Levine

March 19-20, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Whether you are a beginning or seasoned playwright, Mark Harvey Levine will lead you through the writing of an entire play from scratch in two days. He will cover everything from format, plot, character, dialog, and scene to the sale and production of a ten-minute play. Written materials and handouts will be distributed.

As a participant, you will learn how to come up with ideas and what to do (and what not to do) in a script. You will learn several different techniques for writing first drafts and how to approach rewrites. Mark will teach you to read and discuss each others' works with a critical eye. Finally, he will share his expertise on where to submit your play to get it into theaters, festivals, and contests and how to market it.

Class limited to 18 participants

Workshop Leader:  Mark Harvey Levine is one of the modern masters of the short play. He has had over 1300 productions of his plays around the world, from New York to Sao Paulo to Jakarta.

"Shades" swept the Annual Fifteen Minute Play Festival in New York, winning both the "Best Play" (Judge's Award) and "Audience Favorite" Award. "Scripted" won the Alan Minieri Award at the same festival a few years earlier. "The Rental" won the Boston PlaySlam Best Play Award from the Boston SuperSlam (the Best of a year's worth of PlaySlams.) He has also won the Y.E.S. Festival four times, Chester Horn New Play Festival two times, and many other festivals and awards.

One of Levine's short plays, “The Kiss”, was made into a Spanish-language short film called “El Beso," which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was accepted into numerous other film festivals, including the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. It later aired on HBO.

Mark is a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University's School of Drama. Originally from Pittsburgh, he now lives in the Los Angeles area.
