Scrapers are the simplest of woodworking tools: basically, just a flat piece of metal with a sharp edge. But they make quick, quiet work of smoothing surfaces, without the dust of hand-sanding or the noise of power sanding. They're also great for taking off small amounts of wood an all sorts of projects, from getting a drawer front to fit precisely to rounding over a sharp edge.

In this class, you will explore scrapers of different shapes and thicknesses and get hands-on experience with how they work on different types and shapes of wood. Besides the rectangular and curved card scrapers traditionally used in woodworking, you will also learn to use and sharpen a new kind of scraper that is about 1/4 inch thick. Since discovering it, the instructor has found it's his go-to tool for hollowing out a violin body. The Woodworking Studio has purchased two of these so you will be able to continue using them to hollow out and smooth everything from spoons to sculptures during Open Studio sessions after the class.
