About

Beginners and myco-enthusiasts interested in learning how to grow edible mushrooms at home on a small scale will gain hands-on experience learning key steps in the cultivation process. This process includes preparing and inoculating substrates, managing humidity and temperature, and safely harvesting mature mushrooms.

You'll learn a simple technique for growing oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) and prepare a substrate by adding water and nutrients, then mix in oyster mushroom spawn to grow two different varieties.

Nurturing these two kits at home will give you an opportunity to observe colonization and fruiting, and to harvest delicious mushrooms. Whether your goal is to grow gourmet varieties like the oyster mushroom, or deepen your knowledge of fungi in general, this is an excellent first step.

Class Policies

Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Instructor
Joseph Zapotosky

Joseph is an amateur mycologist, and is currently Vice President of the Puget Sound Mycological Society, as well as being a member of many other local clubs. He regularly grows his own oyster mushrooms from varieties he has collected in the wild. Teaching a simple low tech approach to cultivation is one of his ways of introducing others to the Fifth Kingdom (Fungi).
