About

Make three different holiday ornaments with three different basketry artists. You'll complete plaited tree, reindeer, and turtle holiday ornaments with red cedar and birch bark while learning the plaiting technique used in many basket weaving projects.

This class will be conducted in three two-hour segments. At the beginning of class, you and your fellow students will be divided into three sections. Each section will work with one of the three instructors for two hours and then rotate to the next instructor. At the end of the second segment, everyone will rotate again to a third instructor. By the end of class, you will have worked with each instructor to make each of the ornaments.

Instructor
Erin Quann

For Erin, “basketry” is both a spiritual and a creative outlet. She enjoys spending time outdoors hiking in nature and respectfully collecting natural materials that surround her Hood Canal home. Learning to prepare and creatively weave various barks, grasses and roots into a basket from start to finish is like telling a story and very gratifying. Erin’s appreciation for baskets began at a young age when her parents brought home beautiful Native American works of art that they had purchased during travels to the North and Southwest.

Instructor
Becca Lupton

Becca has been a fiber maker her whole life. She has degrees in textile design from the University of Wisconsin and in education from the University of Washington. Her latest obsession has been basketry and she spent most of the pandemic immersed in making baskets. She lives in Port Townsend with her husband and has two grown sons. She is happy to help spread the joy of this kind of weaving with everyone!

Instructor
Cindy Ridgeway

A Seattle native and accomplished basket weaver, Cindy uses traditional basketry techniques to weave anything that bends into a basket, from dandelion stems to cedar bark.
