About

“Tree down!” A common occurrence in the Great Northwest, and many of us want to save some of that tree – let it live on in a work of art. In this class, you will learn how to save that wood for wood-turning or carving into a bowl, tool handle, pretty box, or carved spoons, for instance.

Wood that’s simply left on the ground, or in the garage, or cut up and tossed into a pile will split, crack and eventually rot. Here you will learn the essentials of selecting wood, see a demonstration of chain-sawing the wood properly (evaluating the wood and planning cuts, safety and proper cutting techniques); sealing the wood properly, how to store it, and what the process is for future turning. Even if someone else saws the wood under your direction, you’ll need to know what they should do and how to take care of the wood afterward.

Students are welcome to bring sample wood they want to see processed (1-3 pieces) – we can use it to demonstrate. Maximum diameter is 18”.
