Working wood accurately by hand takes more practice and skill than doing it with power tools, but it's safer, quieter and in some cases almost faster. Whether you want to use hand tools exclusively or along with power tools, this three-session class will help you master the essential tools and techniques so you can work accurately and efficiently. You will also learn about different types of hand tools and why certain ones excel at specific tasks.

The class itself is 2 hours, but the BARN woodshop will have open studio time for 1 hour afterward for students who wish to stay longer to practice what they learned.

Session 1, Jan. 7: Hand tools: What are the "essential" hand tools?

Session 2, Jan. 14: Continue discussion and use of various hand tools including basic joinery.

Session 3, Jan. 21: Miscellaneous essential tools: Continue learning about planes, saws, chisels and add those odd items found in the tool box, including marking tools, measuring methods (without a tape measure), spoke shaves, rasps, special jigs, and whatever comes up in discussion.

There is a $15 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the first class, to cover wood for practice cuts.

Students can use BARN's tools, or bring their own. The instructor will provide a tool list in advance of the class for students who prefer to bring or purchase their own tools.

INSTRUCTOR: A hand tool devotee, Dick Culp has taken many classes at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking and will be sharing what he's learned. He serves on the school's Board of Directors and was a director of Bainbridge Island Community Woodshop until it merged with BARN at the end of 2013.
