About

BARN member:  $27
Non-member:    $30
One two-hour class, followed by optional 1 hour of open studio time

Ramp up your woodworking skills by learning to make mortise and tenon joints with hand tools. Among the strongest of woodworking joints, these are commonly found in chairs, tables and other furniture projects. In this class, you will learn about several styles of mortise and tenon joints and how to design them for maximum strength. You will get to lay out and cut these joints in practice pieces of wood and get tips on how to fine-tune the fit so the pieces mate together nicely.

This class is suitable for woodworkers with limited experience, but you must have completed Hand Tool Essentials or have permission from the instructor, Dick Culp. The class itself is 2 hours, but the BARN woodshop will have open studio time for 1 hour afterward for students who want to stay longer to practice the joints.

There is a $10 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the first class, to cover wood for practice cuts. Students can use BARN's tools, or bring their own. The instructor will provide a tool list in advance of the class for students who prefer to bring or purchase their own tools.

NOTE: The first six people to sign up will be able to participate at the dates and times listed. Additional sections will be added if demand warrants. Please email if the class is full or if you could only take it on a weekend day.

INSTRUCTOR: A hand tool devotee, Dick Culp has taken many classes at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking and will be sharing what he's learned. He serves on the school's Board of Directors and was a director of Bainbridge Island Community Woodshop until it merged with BARN at the end of 2013.
