Kiln Carving is a technique that achieves bah relief in a fuse firing. The process involves cutting a design from ceramic fiber paper, then stacking glass on top of the fiber paper followed by a kiln firing. During firing, the underside of the glass conforms to the ceramic fiber paper pattern, assuming its contours and textures. The effects can be simple or extremely intricate depending on one's taste, where you can go with this technique is endless.

During class you will cut two 10" diameter circles. Then you will create your ceramic fiber paper design on a 11 x 11 kiln shelf.  Your glass will be laid on top of your ceramic fiber design and fuse fired.  These will then be slumped into a functional single serving pasta bowl.

There is a materials fee of $40 that will be added to the class tuition when you register.

As a full-time glass artist who has lived and worked on Bainbridge Island since 1977, she grows and changes with every project. She describes glass, her medium of choice, as having a life of its own. This multifaceted medium shows itself in each of her creations:  stained glass, slumped and fused glass, lamp work, or glass combined with concrete.
