This class has prerequisites. See below.

Learn the basics of designing and building Euro-style cabinets — also known as frameless cabinets — in this two session class. With other students, you will build one or more base cabinets with a drawer, a shelf, and a door.  Cabinets made in this class will be donated to a Bainbridge Island non-profit community project. 

This is an intermediate level class and students shall have previously taken Orientation to the Woodshop and Woodshop Tool Safety Checkout 1 & 2 classes.

Topics to be covered:

• Overview of the frame-less cabinet and its components, including discussions of:
  
• • • Cabinet designs 
    • Materials commonly used in cabinet builds
    • BARN tools available for building cabinets 
• Hands-on cabinet build including:
  
• • Preparing cut sheets from a drawing
• • How to efficiently and safely break down a sheet of plywood 
  • Use of story sticks for accurate layouts and assembly
  • Carcass or box assembly techniques and consideration

• Overview of doors, drawers, and shelves, including discussion of:
  
• • Use of story sticks for accurate layout and hardware installation on doors and drawers
  • Door, drawer and shelf hardware
  • Door, drawer and shelf preparation, assembly and installation
  • Cabinet installation techniques
  • Hands-on door, drawer, and shelf assembly and installation
  • Review of general questions about cabinet designs, assembly methods, hardware options, and installation concerns.
    

• Dave Whitacre - Dave Whitacre moved to Bainbridge in 2013 after he retired as a petroleum engineer in Alaska. Woodworking has been his hobby for the past 40-plus years. He's enjoyed designing and building traditional-styled furniture and hopes to broaden his skills and techniques now that he has more time to devote to the craft.
• Dan Jacobs – Dan has done “barn carpentry” on his sheep ranch in Big Springs, California just south of the Oregon border.  He has also been an amateur “shipwright” aboard his 41-foot wooden yawl.  Dan considered himself a novice woodworker until joining Bainbridge Island Community Wood Shop, BARN’s woodworking studio predecessor.  Dan is a founding member of BARN and a member of BARN’s Wood Shop team that built cabinets for all the BARN Studios, where he specialized in drawers and doors. 
• Wayne Chang - Wayne enjoys the challenge and problem solving that goes along with woodworking. In the past, most of his woodworking involved rebuilding his 100-year-old house. Now it revolves around anything that his daughter is asking him to build.
• Mike Gearheard - Mike is a life-long woodworker with emphasis these days on basic furniture designs and home improvement projects. 
• Michael Gunderson - Michael moved to Bainbridge after a thirty-plus year career in public education. His degree is in the Arts and has taught classes in Art, Jewelry, Ceramics and the Trades, as well as serving as an activities and athletic director. Michael is currently serving as the Wood Studio lead.

Short-sleeve or tight-cuff tops and close-toe comfortable shoes are required. No jewelry other than "button-type" earrings for women are allowed, so no rings, bracelets, necklaces. Long hair must be tied back.
