About

It’s a lot of fun knowing how to make things pop up off of the page, but deciding what structures to use to get your ideas across isn’t always so easy. This class will focus on four simple structures.

We will construct simple models of the structures, and then look at several examples of each structure that have been used in different and interesting ways. We’ll also look at add-on pieces that extend structures beyond their original concept. Students will complete four unique structures that combine learned techniques with ideas. We will also spend some brain storming time with each structure where students can generate more ideas that could be expressed with each structure.

Each student will complete four sample structures and four unique structures that are bound in a simple binding. In addition, students will gain the skills to generate ideas and brainstorm ways to express those ideas in pop-up forms.

The materials for this course are simple (supplies will be provided):

  • Card stock
  • Double stick tape
  • Basic tools and cutting mats.
  • I will supply pre-cut die pieces and patterns.

Details:

Instructor Bio:

Mary Jeanne (MJ) Linford. I have been an artist for over 50 years and have been binding books for most of those years. I made my first pop-up book at age 16, and still have it in my collection. I have had extensive training in pop-up and movable structures (Julie Chen, Shawn Sheehy, Silvia Hijano Coullaut, Duncan Birmingham, and others) and have my limited-edition pop-up books in libraries, museums and private collections all over the United States.

I have a Washington State K-12 teaching certificate in Art and have taught art both privately and in public education for over 30 years. I have specifically taught over 6,000 6th grade students, with a pop-up book curriculum I designed myself, and have written a step-by-step manual for use by children and adults. I have taught pop-up book engineering workshops both at the BARN and to adults from other organizations as well. My evaluations have always been quite positive. I delight in seeing students being successful in my classes and work hard to make sure each and every student succeeds. To see more of my work visit www.badgirlpress.com.
