Forge: Bladesmith a Sloyd Knife

The word “sloyd” is derived from a Nordic term meaning to craft or to create with your hands, often in wood, and implies handicraft-based education.

The Sloyd Knife is a utility carving knife. The one you’ll make in class will not be as embellished as the one shown here, but you will learn the basics of forging this useful carving knife from start to finish in this two-session, 12-hour class.

It’ll feel like you’re traveling back in time as you create this beautiful tool with fire in the forge, anvil, tongs, and hammer, without the use of any power tools.

All of BARN's forge events are held in open-air, unconditioned spaces. Please dress accordingly.

A $30 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers everything you'll need.

Class Policies

• Wear natural-fiber clothing only (no synthetics that could burn your skin).
• Wear sturdy shoes with closed toes and heels. Sandals are not permitted.
• Ages 14 and up are welcome.
