About

It’s lapidary time in the studio — or time for the practice of shaping stone, minerals, or gemstones into decorative items such as cabochons, engraved gems, and faceted designs by cutting, grinding, and polishing.

A trained safety monitor is always on duty. This isn’t a class, and no formal instruction will be given.

Details

Equipment

  • You’ll have access only to lapidary equipment.

Registration

  • Registration is required.

  • Registration closes the night before at 11:59 PM.

  • If no one has shown up by the end of the first hour, the monitor may close the studio.

  • If you know you’ll arrive more than an hour after the start time, email Registrar@bainbridgebarn.org by 11:59 PM the day before.

Materials

You should bring:

  • A variety of rocks in different stages, so you can share the equipment with others.

  • Towels to use during your work and to clean up your workplace.

Prerequisites

  • You must have taken Introduction to Lapidary: Cutting and Carving Stones or its equivalent elsewhere.

  • You must have a current Skills Card, which identifies the tools and equipment you're qualified to work with.

  • If you don’t have a Skills Card but have previous experience, you can fill out a form requesting a Skills Assessment.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.

  • Wear closed-toe shoes and natural-fiber clothing.

  • Do not wear loose or synthetic-fiber clothing, scarves, or ties.

  • Do not wear dangling jewelry, such as necklaces and bracelets.
