Using our Pacific Northwest sweet grass, western red cedar and the blue opulence abalone shell, we will weave the picturesque Pacific coastal mountains, the sound of the waves lapping the shores and popping of sweet grasses as gatherers walk barefooted under the blue skies of tidal flats.
In this two-day class, you will learn basic twinning, reverse twinning, 3 strand twinning, full turn twinning, twinned down rim. Experience in twinning most helpful. If you don't completely finish you basket, you will have the skills to complete it on your own.
Materials used: western red cedar bark, NW sweetgrass, and various threads in lots of colors, large red abalone shell that was respectfully and legally obtained.
Details:
- This is a two-day class. Students may not finish in class but will have the knowledge to complete on their own.
- A lunch break will be provided. Feel free to bring a sack lunch. BARN has a refrigerator and a microwave for your use.
- There is a materials fee of $95 included in the price of class. This includes respectfully and legally harvested abalone shell, cedar and sweet grass collected for this class.
- BARN will be practicing safety measures for the health and well-being of all participants, in accordance with state and CDC guidelines. Everyone using the studio will be required to wear masks, wash or sanitize hands frequently, maintain a distance of six feet between individuals, and stay home if they are sick. Instructor Bios:
Jo Ann Hart, a hunter gatherer by heart, grew up in rural central Kentucky during the 50’s and 60’s. Because there were no children her age to play with, she began learning about and manipulating natural materials in her environment into crude baskets and vessels.
As an adult, her family life brought her to the Pacific NW. After taking a structured Basketry class with instructor Melinda West in the mid 80’s, she has since studied with many contemporary and Native American Basket Weavers. She is a member of the Pacific Northwest Basketry Guild, the Columbia Basin Basketry Guild, and The National Basketry Organization. Jo has taught Basketry for almost 30 years from coast to coast and she shows her work locally and throughout the US. She says gathering, preparation, and weaving with natural materials has given her great pleasure, and she is happy to share her knowledge of plants and basketry.

George Hart grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. He is a recently retired Fish and Wildlife Biologist who has always felt a strong connection to nature. George devoted many years to the gathering, harvesting, and preparation of native plant materials, with his wife Jo Ann, before he developed his own interest in basket making. George has studied with many native and non-native fiber artists. He has been a member of the Seattle Basketry Guild and the Columbia River Basketry Guild for many years. His preferred techniques are coiling and twining. He likes learning about all kinds of materials, and enjoys sharing his passion for fine weaving.
