About

Martha Makosky will lead this fun and informative one-day workshop on linocut or soft-cut blocks! In its simplest form, the block printing process includes carving marks into a specific material to make a stamp, you then roll ink on it, and transfer that image to paper.

In this workshop, each student will receive a linoleum or a soft-cut block on which to draw and transfer an image or images, and then will use a studio press to print the block after carving. As part of her demonstration, Martha will show how either style block can be printed at home with the simple 'back of the spoon' method.

Bring your enthusiasm to this creative class along with your own ideas (i.e. photocopies, drawings, etc.) or plan to brainstorm in studio with Martha. The sky is the limit!

Details:

  • This workshop is geared to the beginning and advanced printmaker
  • Your participation in this workshop qualifies as one of the prerequisites for working on your own in the BARN Print Studio.
  • Feel free to bring a sack lunch and snacks; you can store and reheat food in the kitchenette.
  • A Materials Fee of $25 will be added to the class cost when you register which includes your first large sheet of print paper.
  • Additional print paper is available in class for purchase at $5/sheet.

About the Instructor

Martha Makosky discovered printmaking when she moved to Bainbridge in 2002. She found it integrated all the art skills she had been playing with since childhood in a magical dialogue with the press. Since then she has continued to learn and experiment with a wide variety of printmaking methods.

Martha has enjoyed taking classes and workshops with master printers in Seattle, and she has traveled to Mexico to learn etching and lithography techniques in the Oaxacan tradition. For Martha collecting and combining different ways of making images keeps prompting discovery. Her prints usually involve layering and may include drawing, painting, collaging, stenciling, etching, and other various types of image transfer processes.

Martha's work can be viewed on her website www.marthamakosky.com.
