Monotype is a very flexible form of printmaking that combines the immediacy of gesture and drawing with the expressive qualities of painting. In this two day monotype workshop we will experiment with ways to use ink, brushes, brayers and other materials to get some more of these expressive qualities in the prints we make.  Day One will focus on creating base layer compositions on the press and seeing how we can push ink around. Day Two will afford the opportunity to use some of these base layers to further experiment. The goal of the workshop is to expand the palette of options for creating beautiful images with the press.  

All levels of experience are welcome.

Note: We will have a limited number of brayers, so if you have a large brayer, please be sure and bring it.  Also, please bring your own paper, if you have it, or you can purchase it at the event.  There will be a supply fee of $3.50 per sheet of Reves paper.

Stephen MacFarlane is a professional Seattle artist with over 25 years of experience. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Grinnell College. His training in Fine Art and Printmaking comes from Pratt Fine Arts Center and the School of Visual Concepts in Seattle.   

His work on paper utilizes a printing press, ink and drawing to create one of a kind art pieces that link the delicate roles line and color play together in evoking an emotion with a figure as subject.  

He has shown extensively in the Puget Sound area as well as on the East Coast and is included in many collections.  He has taught drawing at the School of Visual Concepts in Seattle and is a long standing member of Seattle Print Arts.   www.smacfarlane.com
