Chine collé is traditionally used to achieve the fine print detail attainable on delicate surfaces with the structural support of heavier rag paper. It can also be used to add secondary images that have been printed or transferred onto the chine colle paper.

This day-long workshop will explore the traditional and experimental potential of chine colle techniques. In the first hour, Anna will demonstrate several methods to obtain a seamless lamination of washi papers or lightweight fabric onto rag paper in the final print. The rest of the day will be a hands-on exploration of these techniques, printing with both intaglio and relief plates. Participants are encouraged to bring their own plate matrices to work with.

Instructor: Anna McKee studied art and art history as an undergraduate and holds a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Washington (1992). She then pursued further studies in drawing, painting and printmaking. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the Northwest and nationally. She has been printing with various chine colle techniques for 16 years, incorporating techniques taught at Crown Point Press with her own experimenting. Throughout this time she has discovered both limitations and surprising successes. Primarily she has learned that it is always worth experimenting to push the boundaries of possibility.
