Do you have a project that's dragging along? Or a dream project that you can't seem to get started? Bring it to BARN and join us for a full day of creativity, community, and skill-building with Lisa Mortell!

This workshop will support you at any phase of your wool-embellished quilt project. Whether you're stitching one of Lisa’s Blocks of the Month, a Sue Spargo Block of the Month, or working on a new or different design entirely, Lisa will be there to answer your questions and teach you new techniques. Here's what your day will look like:

  • Morning: Guided activities designed to fine-tune and enhance your wool-embellished applique and embroidery techniques.
  • Short break for lunch.
  • Afternoon: Open-stitch time! Choose to keep practicing your new skills from the morning session or shift to working on the project you brought with you. This is your chance to get one-on-one support from Lisa.

Details

  • Skill level: Everyone from absolute beginners who need help starting their first project to experienced stitchers looking for support with advanced techniques.
  • These quarterly sessions (other sessions are set for Feb. 19, May 21, Aug. 20, and Nov. 19- all in 2027) are held in BARN's Great Room, which is to the left as you enter the main doors.
  • Bring snacks or a sack lunch for the short break between sessions. Food options near BARN are very limited. There is a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.
  • See Visit BARN for information on getting to BARN, local transportation, lodging, dining, and things to do.

Materials

  • You are responsible for bringing your own materials:
    • A practice piece of wool.
    • Stitching threads, needles, thimbles, and scissors.
    • If working on a specific quilt, bring your pattern and all materials for that project.
  • Need supplies? Email Lisa ahead of time if you have questions about supplies or want to purchase supplies from her. She will gladly bring them to class for you!

Class Policies

Ages 14 and up are welcome.

In 2010, Lisa Mortell discovered her passion for quilting through a Kaffe Fassett book, and by the time she completed her first quilt, she was completely hooked. Over the past 14 years, her quilting journey has evolved significantly, with a deepening love for hand appliqué and embroidery taking center stage. Lisa began teaching quilting techniques about six years ago, including wool appliqué, needle-turn appliqué, paper piecing, and general quilting. In addition to teaching, she offers engaging trunk shows and launched her wool appliqué patterns in 2024. Her recent works draw inspiration from the natural beauty of her Pacific Northwest roots, particularly the greater Seattle area. Notably, in November of 2024, Lisa’s quilt Garden Friends was displayed at the prestigious 2024 Houston International Quilt Festival and won second place at Road to California. Her most current work, Nataliya, was also displayed at the 2025 Houston International Quilt Festival. You can always see what she is up to on Instagram and Facebook @lisamortellquilter.
