About

This is the second in what we hope to be a series of informal talks, hosted by the Electronics and Technical Arts studio. It is a way for a attendees to get a taste of a new subject. If there is enough interest, some of these talks may become classes in the future.

Silk Smithing is an emerging discipline that combines biology and craft. Harnessing the power of proteins is the new frontier in custom materials and applications. Silk, or its primary protein fibroin in particular has emerged as the 'iron' for a new generation of smiths. Fibroin can be isolated, turned into a liquid, and then re-materialized in multiple forms. Taking advantage of its molecular lego-like construction you can add new materials, new properties, and craft at the nano-scale with impressive results. Tim has been working to develop the methods and craft of studio based silk manipulation since 2014, and is excited to share the current state of the art with BARN.
