About

This is the first in what we hope to be a series of informal talks, hosted by the Electronics and Technical Arts studio. It is a way for a attendees to get a taste of a new subject. If there is enough interest, some of these talks may become classes in the future.

Introduction to Linux and Open Source, Taught by a Semi-Obsessive Autodidact of Dubious Competence

Have you ever wondered what Linux is or what the whole open-source movement is about? Open source software is the ultimate Swiss Army Knife - never before have such powerful and versatile tools been available at your fingertips...for *free*! Open source software lets you unleash your creativity - whether its 3D rendering, writing code, making robots, developing web applications, creating mobile apps, amateur radio, or anything else touching technology, these tools are here to help. Oh yeah, it's tons of fun as well! This seminar will provide a very informal introduction to these topics - just enough to get started on your own.

This will take the form of a short, hour-long talk and demo. The following will be covered, time permitting:

  • Understand what Linux is
  • Understand the distro system
  • Learn the basics of how to teach yourself once you get started
  • Get a tour of Linux running (i) on a laptop and (ii) on a Raspberry Pi
  • Attendees may have the option of installing Linux on a computer, Raspberry Pi, or even a USB stick that they bring with them after the presentation.
