About

The Ham SIG (Special Interest Group) is open to newly licensed amateur radio operators (and OT/old timers alike),  those who are interested in becoming hams and the radio curious.

Each month there will be a different radio-related topic.  A presentation will be followed by a discussion and Q&A.

March topic:

#VHF / UHF Basics for the New Ham

Have you been recently licensed or inactive for years and want to reactivate? VHF / UHF operation and repeater usage are one of easiest and inexpensive paths into the hobby. Bring your HT (hand-held radio) and learn all the basics.  We will be able to program the following radios with the latest Bainbridge and surround frequencies for simplex and repeaters: Yaesu FT-60, ICOM IC-T70A, and most Baofengs.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Understanding the channels programmed on your radio
  • Using channels vs tuning in a frequency
  • When to use simplex, when to use a repeater
  • Simplex protocols vs repeater protocols vs net protocols
  • Local repeaters and local nets
  • Finding repeaters “on the road” and field programming radios

There will be some hands on practice with your radios!

Presenters: Lionel K7BIX and  Ken WA6NFA

Free to members and non-members

Organized by BARC (Bainbridge Island Amateur Radio Club)
