As you start your journey into the world of creating stained glass windows, your mind will likely be filled with ideas and visions of what you want your window to look like. The next step, turning these visions into sketches, is often where students find themselves feeling stuck. But take a breath and relax!

Learn how to turn sketches into patterns. You’ll learn the value of balancing negative and positive spaces, and how each line affects presentation and construction. By focusing on these simple concepts, we’ll demystify the process of going from dream to reality.

Details

  • During class, we'll work together discussing and editing everyone’s sketches, with time for you to make your own edits, or free draw to relax and discover new ideas.
  • We'll also spend time going over glass types and color choices, and how they can impact your design.
  • You’ll leave knowing how to think "design forward" and avoid simple design mistakes.
  • No prerequisite necessary, though glass cutting experience is helpful.
  • This class is recommended if you're planning to take an upcoming stained glass or copper foil class at BARN.

Materials

  • Bring three original sketches to edit and share, any favorite drawing tools, and a sketch book to class.
  • Large-scale graph paper and some drawing and drafting tools will be available to share.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
  • Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required in the Glass Arts Studio at all times.
  • Long hair should be tied back.

Diane Bonciolini

Diane Bonciolini is the olini of Mesolini Glass Studio. Glass is her passion. As a full-time glass artist who has lived and worked on Bainbridge Island since 1977, she grows and changes with every project. She describes glass as having a life of its own. This multifaceted medium shows itself in each of her creations: stained glass, slumped and fused glass, lamp work, or glass combined with concrete.
