About

Learn how to do overlay mosaic crochet, one of the most straight-forward crochet colorwork techniques. Specifically, you will learn:

  • New crochet stitches  back-loop-only single crochet and front-loop-only double crochet
  • How to read mosaic crochet color charts
  • How to change colors in mosaic crochet
  • How to deal with all the loose ends mosaic crochet produces

You'll learn the stitches first, and then practice your new skills while creating a colorwork coaster.

Details

Skill level: Advanced beginners

Details

  • Download a copy of the Spirit Mosaic 4 pattern by Elizabeth Ragsdale. It's available for $2 on Ravelry here
  • You'll need approximately 15 yards each of three colors of fingering weight yarn. One should be a light color for the background. The other two should be contrasting solid colors. Please do not bring black yarn as one of your colors. This technique requires you to pick up individual strands of yarn with your hook, and it is very difficult to see black yarn.
  • You'll need an appropriate-sized crochet hook and a pair of scissors. A 3.5mm or 3.75mm hook should work well for fingering weight. Other weights of yarn also can be used, as long as all three colors are the same weight. If you use a heavier weight, your coaster will be bigger, and you'll need to use a larger hook.

Project

You'll make a Southwest-themed coaster using mosaic crochet colorwork.

Prerequisites

Crochet 101 or other previous crochet experience. You should know the basic crochet stitches, especially chain stitch and single and double crochet. You should also know how to start with a slip knot and how to fasten off.

Class Policies

Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Instructor
Robyn Weimer

Robyn learned to crochet from her grandmother in high school, along with many other needle arts including macrame, needlepoint, crewel, and cross stitch. She did many crochet projects over several years, until her children and career squeezed out the time to continue. After retiring in 2019, she resumed crochet and other needle arts and gratefully found that the muscle memory came back quickly. After moving back to the Pacific Northwest in 2021, she joined BARN and now participates in the Fiber Arts, Woodworking, and Tech Lab studios. She’s interested in learning new skills and finding opportunities for cross-studio collaboration.
