Designed for woodworkers who know how to use the major woodworking tools and are ready to build a challenging piece of furniture, this class will walk you through the process of buying wood, milling it to different dimensions, and building the basic cabinet plus components that include a wine rack and drawer.

You'll purchase your own wood and hardware, so you can be as thrifty or as indulgent as you wish. Attend Intro to Craft a Liquor Cabinet/Wine Rack (free) from 7 to 8 PM on Friday, Sept. 11, to learn how much wood to purchase and the design considerations involved in selecting the wood. There will be nearly three weeks after that to purchase the materials. The instructor will lead a group shopping trip to purchase wood from the warehouse at Edensaw Woods in Port Townsend for those who are interested.

The 10 hands-on sessions that follow will be three hours each. The Thursday sessions overlap with Open Studio, so students may need to share use of tools with others during those times.

Details

  • Plan to spend $200-$400 for wood and approximately $200 on hardware for your cabinet. The cost of the materials is not included in the class fee. The instructor will bring catalogs to the first meeting so you can order the necessary hardware.
  • To stay on schedule, you'll need to work on your cabinet outside of class (about three hours of one Open Studio session each week). Open studios are 9 AM to 3 PM Wednesdays and Fridays, 3 to 9 PM Thursdays, and noon to 6 PM Saturdays and Sundays.

Prerequisites

Materials

  • A $5 materials shop fee is included in the price of the class (see Details regarding separate lumber and hardware purchase).

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.
  • You must wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid dangling clothing and jewelry. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.
