About

We have the incredibly good fortune to bring Carolina Veenstra to the BARN to teach this wonderful workshop...you will learn the traditional techniques and craftsmanship from a master binder!

In this traditional bookbinding class, we will make a flat-spine case bound book.

Case bindings are one of the basic binding techniques for book binders.  They incorporate traditional signatures sewn onto tapes, backed and mounted on a hard back binding with a spine.  For this class, we will be binding a "book in sheets" printed book, made available from Volcano Arts printers:  Alice in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll.  However, if preferred, you can bind a blank book.  We'll  use heavier weight paper to bind this blank book, useful for many purposes,.  There will be handouts to accompany the instruction, so you can duplicate these techniques at home.  We will also cover basic bookbinding skills and techniques.

Details:

  • This class can only accommodate 8 students.  We will start a waiting list when we have 8 students.  We advise that you register early for this class as it is sure to fill fast.
  • Materials: All materials and tools will be provided.  If you have tools that you prefer to work with, you are welcome to bring them as long as they are well marked. There will be a $20 supply fee included in the course fee.
  • Skill Level: Some basic bookbinding knowledge will help, but is not vital.
  • Tuition assistance is available. Click here to apply.
  • Ages: Ages 16+ Welcome.

  • Please bring a bag lunch. We have a pod-style coffee maker, microwave and refrigerator in our kitchenette.
