If you are looking for a good grounding in book making, this class is for you! We will focus on basic and intermediate level book arts skills, teaching studio tricks and tips, correct terminology, materials exploration and skill building. We'll explore folding techniques, simple books that use the accordion fold in a variety of ways, and standard signature binding techniques.
Starting out on Friday evening, we'll do a writing exercise and make it into a small book. We will then focus on basic and intermediate skills development on Saturday and Sunday while binding a variety of books.
This course will give you fob access to the Book Arts studio from 8 am to 10 pm seven days per week. A syllabus will be sent to those who have registered. Complete handouts will be distributed at the beginning of the class.
Details:
- There will be a $20 materials fee.
- Ages: Ages 14+ Welcome.
- This is a 3 sessions class. The first class is from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM, the next two classes are from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM
- Please bring a bag lunch. We have a pod-style coffee maker, microwave and refrigerator in our kitchenette.
This class can only accommodate 8 students. We will start a waiting list when we have 8 students. We advise that you register early for this class as it is sure to fill fast.
Materials: All materials and tools will be provided. If you have tools that you prefer to work with, you are welcome to bring them as long as they are well marked.
Instructor Bio:
Mary Jeanne (MJ) Linford has been a professional book artist for over 30 years, under the press name Bad Girl Press (badgirlpress.com). Learning both by doing and also studying with Hazel Koenig at the University of Washington, she specializes in pop-up books and unusual bindings, and is well versed in traditional binding styles. She also works with three other women under the press name Full Plate Press. Her books are in selected museums, libraries and collections nationwide, and can be seen in the book arts room at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.
This class was previously scheduled to start April 19-22. The 22nd is a holiday so we have moved the class ahead one week.~tammie
