About

BARN Member: $84
Non-member: $92

Saturday, March 26 from 10 am to 3:30 pm

Materials Fee: $20 (payable at class)

An ancient style of bookbinding, Coptic binding adapts beautifully to modern materials. This style of binding is completely non-adhesive with an exposed spine. The great advantage of a Coptic-bound book is that it lays perfectly flat when opened, making it an ideal choice for sketchbooks and/or journals.

We’ll start by learning basic bookbinding techniques (signature making and covering book boards with decorative papers), and then bind the signatures and boards together.  You’ll walk away with a fully functional, beautiful sketchbook with a variety of papers of your choice within, AND the skills to create more whenever you wish.

The class includes a wide choice of decorative papers for covers and inside pages, as well as most equipment.  An optional bookbinding kit for making more books is available at an additional fee.

Instructor: Mary Jeanne (MJ) Linford has been a bookbinder and book artist for over 45 years, and currently works under the press name Bad Girl Press. Her work can be seen locally at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, as well as in private and public collections nationwide.
