Community Talk: Making Movable Wood Type
Hear what it takes to make wood type for the letterpress in the Print & Book Arts Studio.
About
Hear Alejandro Acosta tell the story of his experience learning how to make movable wood type for the Print & Book Arts Studio — from choosing a font to deciding what approach to take and making custom cardboard boxes to store the type.
Movable wood type is not as easy to acquire as some other supplies used by members of the studio. It either needs to be commissioned months ahead, or requires luck to score some on the internet with fingers crossed: Is it in good shape? Is there enough? Is the seller reliable? He decided that was too much of a hassle.
Alejandro decided last year to experiment making wood type, having had some experience in the Woodworking Studio, as well as the Tech Lab. He noticed the wood type sets available in Book Arts were sufficient “when planning to print an inspiring message with two or three words like ‘I like wine,’ but not quite sufficient to set a full sentence.”
