About
Transform locally milled hardwood into polished address signs for the Ericksen Community affordable housing project being built by Housing Resources Bainbridge.
If you've taken Woodworking Basics: Prepping Lumber for Projects, your help would be especially welcome on this community service project. The work focuses on using alder that grew on the property at Knechtel Way and Ericksen Avenue to create inviting, individualized address signs for 18 rental apartments.
You'll work with experienced woodworkers to assess what needs to be done on each slab — they're all different — and then help do the work. The team will smooth every slab, cut one long edge straight, and clean up the other long edge, which will be left as a natural "live" edge. Some slabs are likely to need bow tie inserts to stabilize splits in the wood, and some slabs will probably need epoxy repairs. After final sanding, each slab will get an oil finish.
Details
- This project is scheduled with four sessions, each 9 AM to 1 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 26 and 28 (this session) and June 2 and 4. Each work day is listed separately so you can sign up to help on one or more days.
- Signing up for multiple days will probably give you experience in more aspects of working with slabs.
