Design and weave two cotton hand towels (see sizes below under "Materials") for yourself on the rigid heddle loom, using a rainbow of colors in 8/2 cotton.

Details

  • A variety of plain weave color and weave techniques will be demonstrated and displayed, then you'll be guided to design, warp, and start to weave your own project.
  • You'll learn how to warp and weave with 8/2 cotton on the rigid heddle loom.
  • We'll also cover basic elements of project design including division of space, size of finished project, and calculating materials.
  • You'll have access to your BARN loom for seven days after the class to finish weaving your towels. Or, if you have your own 24-inch rigid heddle loom you'd like to use, please bring it along with a 10 dent reed that fits your loom. You can complete your weaving at home.
  • Bring lunch or a snack to enjoy in the common area during a break. There is a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.

Prerequisites

  • You must know how to warp a rigid heddle loom! You should either have taken Introduction to Rigid Heddle Loom Weaving at BARN or have successfully warped at least one of your own projects.
  • If you don't yet have experience warping the rigid heddle loom, but would like to take this class, please sign up for an upcoming introduction class or contact  weaving.coordinator@bainbridgebarn.org to set up a private class.

Materials

  • A $25 materials fee, included in the price of the class, covers enough 8/2 cotton to weave two towels, finished size approx. 15 by 25 inches (16-inch loom) or 22 by 30 inches (24-inch loom). BARN has looms of both sizes. You can choose your finished size according to your preference and time constraints.

Class Policies

  • Ages 14 and up are welcome.

Instructor
Alison Waller

Originally from Yorkshire, UK, Alison lived in China for several years before moving to Puget Sound in 2019 with her husband and two young children. She has enjoyed knitting, crochet, and working with beads since childhood, but it wasn't until moving to Washington that she tried weaving. In the last four years, she's become obsessed both with making baskets and making fiber on a floor loom or rigid heddle loom. She has taken classes with many local and nationally recognized weavers at BARN, developing her skills as a weaver and a teacher. She’s now delighted to serve as the weaving coordinator in the Fiber Arts Studio, where she also teaches rigid heddle and floor loom classes.
