Build an emergency back-up power supply based on a 12-volt Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery in a weatherproof protective case for those times when the power is out.
The first session will start by configuring the protective case to externally mount switches, connectors, and components. These components will include a dual power pole panel mount receptacle with a 20-amp circuit to power a radio or other DC device and a solar panel input connector. A USB connector with a 5-volt 4.2 Amp USB 2 and USB C ports also will be added for charging devices like cell phones and tablets and powering emergency LED lights. In addition, a switched panel-mounted volt meter will be installed. A battery isolation switch will be installed so the entire power box can be turned off for safety. A cigarette lighter-type receptacle (CLR) will be included to charge your battery operated devices such as laptop computers, tablets, or hand-held radios.
The second session will involve installation of any components not installed during the first session and wiring all the parts together. In addition, the battery and solar charge controller will be installed. This charge controller allows the use of a solar panel to charge the battery.
The third session will be used to complete configuration and wiring of the parts and test the functionality of all the components in the emergency back-up power supply box. There will be a number of instructors to assist people. Those with some building skills might be able to complete the class in two sessions.
