About

This class has prerequisites. Please see description.

In the third class of BARN's basic bowl-turning series, students will progress to a more advanced level of bowl turning: turning a bowl that is deeper yet, and has an enclosed shape.

Turning a bowl that is quite deep (relative to diameter), with an enclosed shape is a challenge! You will turn one bowl during this class while learning to use three types of bowl gouges, ground with different bevel angles to help you navigate the steeper and more constrained profile of the bowl and to create a deeper, flat bottom without having “catches.” You will develop an understanding of why the different grinds work and when to use which one so that you can turn independently on increasingly sophisticated bowl shapes during open studio or at home on your own lathe.

The material will be green maple or black locust.

Details:

  • There is a $20 materials fee included in the price of class.
  • Prerequisites:
Open to those who have (a) completed BARN's "Introduction to Bowl Turning" and "Bowls II" classes and been approved for independent bowl-turning during open studio or (b) demonstrated the necessary lathe safety and bowl-turning skills using a bowl gouge during a private studio session with the instructor. Arrange that by contacting Jamie Straw at (360) 551-9233.
    • Students must also have taken BARN’s class on Sharpening Lathe Tools or bring their own bowl gouges.
Instructor: Jamie Straw has been turning wood for several years, working on both spindle and bowl projects, and has taught woodturning at BARN since July 2017. She also serves as coordinator of BARN’s woodturning classes.  She is past Vice President for Education and Training for the local chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. Her focus is on helping students build skills progressively as they design and create their woodturning projects.
